General Policies and Procedures

Lunch
On the first day of school, Monday, August 28th, kindergarteners will have a staggered start with students with last names beginning with A-M attending from 9:00-11:30, and students with last names beginning with N-Z attending from 1:30-4:00. Lunch will NOT be served to kindergartners on that day.

For the remainder of the week of August 28th, we kindly ask that all kindergartners bring a lunch from home to allow them time to acclimate to the routines of eating in the cafeteria. Beginning the week of September 5th, your child will have the choice of bringing a lunch from home or obtaining a school lunch. If s/he chooses to get a school lunch, there are typically two selections to choose from each day (refer to the lunch menu online). Please be sure to look at the lunch menu and have a conversation with your child each morning to help him/her to understand if they have a lunch from home or will be getting a school lunch. If your child plans to have a school lunch, please help him/her to make a selection as to his/her lunch choice prior to coming to school to help us to expedite our morning lunch count. For the 2023-24 school year, all Michigan public school students in grades Pre-K-12 will have access to free lunch everyday through the "Healthy School Meals for All" program.

Snacks
Beginning on the first day of school, please send in one healthy snack with your child each day. In order to avoid confusing snacks with lunches, please send the snack in a separate bag, clearly labeled “Name's Snack.” Please be sure the snack is a healthy choice to help your child to be energized and ready to learn. Please do not send in drinks with the exception of water in a spill proof container with a flip-top straw or a pop-up top.

Birthdays
We like to make birthdays a special occasion. Our school has a non-food birthday treat policy. Although not necessary, if you would like to provide a non-food birthday item for the class, feel free to send in things such as pencils, stickers, erasers, etc. These items can be sent to school in your child’s backpack on the day or near the day of his/her birthday. They are typically distributed at the end of the day and are put into backpacks to go home with the students. Please understand that it is not necessary to send in birthday items as we will make the day extra special for your child! Summer birthdays will be celebrated near the end of the school year. Please note that birthday invites and thank you cards cannot be distributed at school per school policy.

Labeling
Please be sure to clearly label ALL of your child’s personal belongings that will be coming to school including coats, hats, mittens, shoes, boots, lunchboxes/bags, backpacks, etc.

Take Home Folder
Your child will be given a take home folder that should be used to transport such things as homework projects, notes, etc. to and from school daily so please keep this in a safe location at home.

Homework
There will not be official homework assignments on a daily basis; however there will be homework projects sent home for your child to complete periodically throughout the school year. Please be sure to set aside consistent time to read to your child. The students will be expected to complete 30-45 minutes of iReady reading lessons, and 30-45 minutes of iReady math lessons online each week beginning after the first diagnostic.

Superstar Program
In our room, we work very hard to promote the social-emotional well-being of all students. To that end, each child will be assigned a week during the school year where he/she will be our “Superstar.” This is a great opportunity for students to get to know their classmates more intimately. It also promotes self-confidence and builds social skills in the students. More specific information about our Superstar program will be distributed at Curriculum Night.

Parent Participation
Parent participation is welcome at Glengary!  Our PTA is a wonderful organization that coordinates many schoolwide and classrooms events!  Parents are encouraged to join the PTA and volunteer as you are able to support our school!
