In science, we read the book, Smelling by Rebecca Rissman to learn more about our sense of smell. Then, the students put their sense of smell to use in order to help a plastic bear cub they were given to find the mother bear with the matching scent. Afterwards, they reflected on what they learned about their sense of smell by drawing and labeling a smell that they like and a smell that they don't like.
During our math lesson, we were introduced to our math mascot, the Count von Count who taught us about the number Zero (0) the Hero, along with the number one (1). These numbers will begin our growing number collection. The students also enjoyed listening to the book, The Count Counts Scary Things and counting the various scary things in the story.
In math, we discussed where the students have seen numbers in their homes. Then, we took a walk to see places in and around our school where we could discover numbers. After returning to class, we discussed what the numbers we found were used for and we drew a picture of one of the numbers we found and where it was located.
This week, we have been learning about the character strength of Curiosity as part of our Positivity Project, character development program. Together, we created a list of the many things that the students students in our class our curious about so that we can continue to explore and learn about those things throughout the school year.
During our phonics lesson, the students had fun reviewing the sound of the letter S by playing the /s/ not /s/ game where they sorted pictures into two columns - things that begin with the /s/ sound and things that begin with a different sound.
In science, we read the book, Hearing by Rebecca Rissman to learn more about our sense of hearing. Then, the students were each given a container and asked to use only their ears to find a partner with the matching sound in their container. Afterwards, the students were introduced to scientific explanations learning that scientists use the information they collect to defend their claims. Together as a class, we wrote a scientific explanation for their discoveries.
Claim: There is only one match for the sound in each container.
Evidence: We know this because when each container was compared to all of the others, the same sound was heard in only one of them. This was confirmed when Mrs. Steele checked inside each container to see that the containers with the same sounds had the same contents inside of them.
In math, the students had lots of fun exploring the pattern blocks and learning the names for each - the green triangle, the orange square, the blue rhombus, the red trapezoid, the tan rhombus, and the yellow hexagon.
