Vowels Are Special Letters

In our phonics lesson, the students learned about vowels and consonants.  Lots of fun was had discovering vowels in words around our classroom and even in our names!

Putting Open-Mindedness Into Practice

Continuing our study of the character strength of Open-Mindedness as part of the Positivity Project, the students listened to the story of The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds.  Next, they made a dot on a plain white piece of paper just as the main character Vishti did in the story.  Then, they used the character strengths of Creativity and Open-Mindedness to make their dots original.  They proudly signed their names to their completed masterpieces.  To allow everyone to see the individual creations, the students took a gallery walk so they could enjoy and appreciate the Open-Mindedness of their peers.

Building Our Reading Stamina

In Reading Workshop, students have been working on building their stamina during private reading time while independently reading "Learn About the World" books.

Learning Our Names By Heart

 In Phonics, the students received their name baggie where they practiced studying their names by following the important steps we learned in class: 

1. Read it.
2. Clap and stomp the beats.
3. Count the letters.  
4. Study the letters.  
5. Cheer it.  

Then, they practiced putting the letter tiles for their name in order beginning with a capital letter, followed by lowercase letters.  Finally, they had lots of fun following the steps to teach their name to a partner.

The Character Strength of Open-Mindedness

As part of the Positivity Project, we learned about the character strength of Open-Mindedness.  We read the book, The Koala Who Could by Rachel Bright and together we brainstormed ideas of things we would like to learn or try this school year. 

Number Stations

In math, the students participated in number stations where they counted out objects to represent the number 5 in numerous ways.
