Beautiful Oopses!

As part of the Positivity Project, students learned about the character strength of "Appreciating the Beauty and Excellence" all around us.  Together, we read the book, Beautiful Oops! by Barney Saltzberg and discovered that making a mistake is actually an opportunity to create something beautiful.  Students were all given a piece of paper with an oops - a tear, a smudge, a hole - and with some creativity, they turned them into beautiful masterpieces which are currently on display in our "Oops Gallery" in our classroom.

Many Glengary students demonstrated exceptional artistic talent during the 2022-23 school year and had their masterpieces on display at the ESC Art Show that was held on Thursday, April 13th prior to the Board of Education meeting.  These students were also honored at the start of the board meeting! Congratulations to Hayley and Melissa, our very own kindergarten artists, for this extra special recognition!

March is Reading Month Closing Ceremony

On the afternoon of Thursday, April 6th, our entire school population came together to close out and celebrate our March is Reading Month festivities!  This year, all families at Glengary were given a copy of the book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl.  Students were encouraged to read as many minutes as they could and upon returning their reading calendars each week, they were awarded various pieces to add to various Charlie and the Chocolate Factory themed bulletin boards throughout our school.  All students who returned their calendars at the end of the month were able to turn themselves into an Oompa Loompa and add it to our hallway display!  During the closing ceremony, all students were given a Wonka Bar and one student from every class found a golden ticket and won the sequel to the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory book, titled Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator.  While the students enjoyed their chocolate bars, some of the Glengary staff read the final chapters aloud to the students.  This was truly a wonderful culmination to March is Reading Month!

Author Bryan Chick Visits Glengary

On the morning of Thursday April 6th, Bryan Chick, author of The Secret Zoo series, visited Glengary Elementary!  Students is grades kindergarten through second grade met with him in the Media Center where he shared stories of his childhood and secret places he visited on his path to becoming an author.  It was so enjoyable to listen to him read the first chapter of his book, The Secret Zoo to us.  He also shared the writing and editing process with us and how he used the character strengths of perseverance and creativity to fulfill his dream of becoming an author.  In addition, he showed us the process of how the pictures on the covers and within his books went from sketches to paintings until they reached the final stage to be ready for publication.  He also asked "big questions" and students who answered correctly were awarded with a free copy of one of his books!  It was so exciting and inspiring for the students to learn that they too can become an author like Bryan Chick!
