Hug Buddy Postcards to Break a World Record

Today, students colored and decorated Hug Buddy postcards created by 10 year-old, Avery Schwartz.  These postcards will be sent to military troops and platoons, children's hospitals, underprivileged schools, and more as a random act of kindness to help change someone's day and brighten their spirits. The postcards will be part of a coloring station at Viewfest, a psychologist-curated community event to support mental health at Walled Lake Central High School on October 9, 2021.  They will be used to try to break a world record for the most continuous postcards in a line.  Stay tuned to see if the record is broken!!!

Scientists explore with their sense of taste

 Today, we explored our sense of taste by reading the book, Tasting by Helen Frost and discussing the five different types of tastes - sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.  During snack time, the students used their sense of taste to determine the type of taste of their individual snacks.  Then, they recorded their findings by drawing a picture of their snack and labeling what it is and how it tastes.

Searching for the letter M in books

 To continue our study of the letter M, the students had lots of fun searching for the uppercase and lowercase m in books!  A lot of discoveries were made!!

Scientists explore using their sense of touch

Today, we learned about our sense of touch and how our skin helps us to feel things in our environment.  We had lots of fun using only our sense of touch to explore an item in a mystery bag and trying to figure out what was inside based on the properties of how it felt.  Afterwards, we reflected on our learning by drawing something from home that we touch and labeling what it is and how it feels.  

Exploring the Concept of "Length"

 In math, we learned about the concept of "length" by finding our matching partner who had a strip of paper that was the same length.  We also discussed and used the terms, "longer" and "shorter" in our exploration.  After finding our matching partner, we spent some time learning about each other (favorite food, brothers or sisters, etc.) .  Then, we drew a picture of the new friend we made to take home and share with our families.

Scientists explore with their sense of sight

 Today, we learned about our sense of sight and how our eyes work to see things around us.  We read the book, The Button Box by Margarette S. Reid and discussed what it means to "sort".  Then, we used our sense of sight to explore and sort buttons in various ways.  We also documented the way we sorted on our science recording sheet.

Introducing Our Phonics Mascot - Mabel

 During our Phonics lesson, we learned the steps of how to learn a name which we will use to learn the names of all of the students in our class.  We began by studying and learning about the name of our new phonics mascot, Mabel the elephant!  We counted the letters in her name, studied them closely, and cheered each letter!  Then, we had fun finding things around our room that begin with the /m/ sound like in Mabel.
